Julia Wolf Fascinates With Genre-Bending Cross-Cultural Sound

Italian-American songwriter Julia Wolf fascinates with a magnetic R&B-tinged; pop, intermingled with rap to create a genre-bending cross-cultural sound. Her latest 2020 single “Hoops” has garnered over 4.1k views in the first week of the YouTube video premiere.

All the way from Queens, New York comes Julia Wolf, an artist that prizes lyrics above all else. Self-described as ‘really, really tall’ and ‘really Italian,’ Wolf is an artist of few words, preferring to let her musical work speak for themselves. Wolf is a stage name, picked out of inspiration from her sister’s imaginary and protective pet wolf in childhood. Julia’s signature style is her dynamic pop melodies that grab from diverse genres, most commonly R&B and rap. Her sound has been described as a magnetic, ‘unique, genre-building sound.’

The alt-pop “Hoops” track is the latest release by the performer. Extraordinarily, “Hoops” is also her seventh single of 2020, a year in which she also debuted her first EP, self-titled as “Julia.” Having only launched her musical career in 2019, Julia already has 10 singles and a 4-song EP to her name. Busily creating, the catchy and hip-hop inspired “Hoops” garnered 4.1k views on YouTube in the first week of release and is the top 9th most popular song on Julia’s Spotify. Thematically about celebrating good friends, Julia was nostalgic when writing it and hopes listeners are inspired to continue staying connected to one another.

The most popular song of Julia’s is “Ghost,” also released in 2020 has been streamed over 1.6 million times on Spotify. Full of poignant lyrics, the song discusses healthy boundaries and the feelings that lead to a person ghosting friends, “I don’t mean to ghost you but I will, can’t fuck with people who have too much time to kill. You like to argue when you really need to heal. Don’t be mad if I don’t stick around and chill.” Julia likes her lyrics to allow listeners to dive into their own emotions and experiences, even in unconscious ways. Another notable song of Julia’s that has amassed attention is “Immortale,” considered part of her cultural crossover music with a blend of singing in both English and Italian. Julia has collaborated and appeared on 8 more tracks, with artists such as Fonz, FH Snoop, 3rd Eye, and more.

For years, Julia performed only cover songs by singing and playing the piano. Julia studied at the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music and also studied classical music, having possibly gone towards being a concert pianist instead. Her goal is to paint vivid pictures via eloquent lyrics and ‘be as visually striking as possible with my lyrics so that you can remember things’ while being painfully honest. Not one to be idle, Julia also produces her own music and recently have been collaborating with producer Jackson Foote. The songwriter says the flow and melody always aligns after the lyrics come, also praising Jackson Foote for being able to flesh out ideas she envisions to bring more perspective to the concepts. The plan is to drop more singles before releasing a carefully-timed album that the lyricist does not want to rush to present.
