Heart-Rendering Truth from Rein

Emerging artist Rein specializes in contemporary, R&B;, jazz, and folk music and in July 2020, released a mellow “Waiting (Stripped).” He then croons his way through his next two singles, “My Love” and “Mine,” in November 2020. Addressing heartbreaks and relationships, his upcoming debut EP will release in January 2021.

Emerging Filipino-Canadian artist Rein Cabalquinto specializes in contemporary, R&B, jazz, and folk music. The singer, who usually only goes by Rein, focuses on creating acoustic songs. Born in Manila, Philippines, Rein only released his first single as recent as July 2020. This single, titled “Waiting (Stripped)” comes out to a little under 4 minutes long. “Waiting (Stripped)” puts listeners in a reflective mood with its mellow vibes, slowed-down rhythms, and piano accompaniment. The performer’s croon perfectly accompanies the song as he softly sings about “the comfort of my bed, days get so long, every night I lay and cry, wanting you right by my side.” Though the song begins somewhat hopeful, the story takes a turn for the worse as Rein sings about heartbreak and loss. “Another day goes by. Longing for that day to come, when I can finally hold you in my arms. Tears on my face, losing all my faith in you. I gave my all, but you’re the one who messed it up, leaving me for what you’ve done. Cut me apart, bleeding from the lies you gave.”

The Winnipeg-raised indie singer and songwriter went on to release his second single in November 2020, called “My Love.” This single comes with two versions, an official version and a stripped version. The two versions’ introductions differ right from the beginning with different vibes. The official version sounds more refined, more upbeat, whereas the stripped song keeps it simple with only a piano in the background and highlights Rein’s vocals. Where the official version utilizes Rein’s voice to harmonize with the music and instruments, the stripped version quiets the music and directs attention to his words and lyricism.

Rein’s consistent themes in his artistic work concentrate on relationships, heartbreaks, and hard times. His third song also debuted in the same month and is his first song to show off his violin-playing skills. This track also has two versions. One is a piano version and the second a duet. On Rein’s Instagram, he dedicates this to his partner, Apollo Miao.

“Waiting (Stripped)” and “My Love” will appear in the planned EP, to be released in January 2021. This EP will be called “WAR” and include four additional songs to the two singles. Before this comes out, the Canadian artist will be releasing another single called “One More Day,” on December 5, 2020. The song will address the pandemic’s restrictions in Manitoba.
